Why do VCs keep asking for more information?

Repeated investor data requests can be diligence or a sign that the decision question remains unresolved. Learn how to respond without building an endless follow-up pack.

Short answer

More information can be a serious diligence step, but it can also mean the investor has not identified a decision they can defend. The question is not how many documents you send. It is which specific uncertainty the requested material could resolve, who will review it and what happens afterward. Ask for that decision path, then supply the smallest evidence set that actually tests the claim.

Requests are activity; the decision question is progress

A financial model, customer reference or cohort analysis can serve an investment decision. But a long list of requests, with no explanation of what each one will change, can absorb founder time without moving the process forward. The existence of a request alone cannot tell you which situation you are in.

Turn each request into a test

If the investor can name the claim and the next decision, respond precisely. If the question keeps moving after the relevant evidence arrives, consider whether this is a room mismatch rather than a proof gap.

A useful reply

We can send the cohort analysis. To make sure it answers the right question: are you testing retention quality, repeatability across customers or the revenue bridge for this round? We can point you to the relevant evidence and agree on the next review step.

That is an invitation to clarify the decision, not a demand that an investor disclose confidential internal discussions. A meaningful answer can also be “we are not ready to proceed.”

Know when to stop expanding the pack

Keep a simple record: request, underlying hypothesis, evidence sent, reviewer and next checkpoint. When a new request cannot be connected to a decision, ask why it matters before building it. Preserve time for investors with a defined process.

Key takeaway

Send evidence that resolves a defined investment question. More documents do not, on their own, create conviction.
